Welcome to Shoreline! We offer a broad curriculum, centred on literacy and numeracy, and surround it with a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. Our school is small, but our heart is big. We are the little school that does it all! We invite you to visit us and see what we are all about. We are proud of what we do at Shoreline and are excited to share it with you.
How Did You Do Your Book Report?
This is how our grade 6 student Peter W. did his! What a fine example of great learning and creativity. Well done Peter!
Fantastic Learning!
The students of Mrs. Moreau's grade 8 English class have been writing about child labour in the nineteenth century. Click on the following link to hear some of the product of their studies. http://shorelineenglish.weebly.com/
Well done to all those involved!
Recycling at Shoreline
As you are likely aware, at Shoreline we have been working hard to reduce the amount of waste we create, and to develop a system to handle it in an environmentally responsible way. We began the first phase of this initiative three years ago and have had great success. At Shoreline we now compost all organic materials and recycle all papers, plastics (hard and soft), foils, returnables and batteries. With all this success, it has become a large job! We are now realizing it is a bit too large, and because of this we are going to seek your support in making some changes.
Phase 1
As a result of this phase we have composted and diverted over 1.5 tons of waste food product since September 2010. We have analyzed the successes and drawbacks and have concluded that the grade 6 students in general generate the least amount of waste. This is because many of them are not bringing single use, throwaway products to school. A big thank you to parents and guardians of students in all grades who send lunches to school in reusable containers!
Phase 2:
Starting after spring break on Monday, March 28th we will be moving to Phase 2 of our waste management plan. Over the last few years we have learned that we do not have the capacity to process the following items and can no longer accept them:
· single use yogurt, milk and pudding containers
· single meal throwaway plastic containers or trays. (These often include cheese with crackers and other snacks.)
· plastic knives, forks or spoons
· any Styrofoam products
· Zip loc bags for sandwiches or any single use plastic bags
As we are not able to accept these items in the school, we suggest parents use reusable alternatives: brown paper bags, tupperware and small thermoses are quick solutions. Also, heavier reusable, plastic utensils can be purchased at any store that sells camping equipment such as Wal-Mart or Canadian Tire.
We are very proud of the recycling work we are doing at Shoreline, and with your support in making these changes will be able to continue with this excellent program. Thank you in advance for helping us do so.

How to Stay in Touch?
Finally, at Shoreline we work hard to keep in touch with parents. We do this in a number of ways. Each week we send out a calendar and summary of the week to come in the TWAS (This Week at Shoreline). As the TWAS lists all major events, field trips, practices and games etc., it is a great way to stay connected to your child's program at the school. To communicate with families we also make extensive use of our website (http://www.shorelinecommunityschool.sd61.bc.ca/). The site holds a great amount of current information on a variety of topics. The front page of the site will have regular entries by me as well as a listing of all the day's announcements. In addition to these publications we also send out our monthly newsletter on the last Friday of every month. As much as possible we try to send these items out electronically. With this in mind we ask that you provide your current email address on the student information documentation we send home in the second week of school. If you would like a paper version of the TWAS or the newsletter, please ask your child to pick it up at the office. We are excited about the year ahead. We hope you are too!
